Jade Goody (5 June 1981 – 22 March 2009) and Controversial Dying

Maybe you’ve heard about Jade Goody even if you’re not from the UK.

She became famous in that country for appearing on the reality TV Show Big Brother and is now dying from cancer.

I’m mentioning this because I was struck by the similarity of her story and that of Jessica who started this web site.

They both had their story on television, they both got married in the late stage of their lives, and they both had a cancer that couldn’t be cured.

If you’re like me and are interested in finding out more about Jane Goody, but don’t live in the UK where there is total media saturation about her, then here are some links for you to find out a little more:

I’m also mentioning Jade Goody because there is some controversy in the UK over her decision to sell the rights to her story for a large sum of money – she lived on TV and may die on the box too.

I personally don’t see the problem, she has two children and wants to do the best she can for them even though she has very little time left to live.

In fact I get rather tired of hearing healthy people telling those who are dying how they should die.

My message to all you people complaining – keep your opinions to yourselves and maybe when your time comes you’ll get to make your own choices.

Dignity is about choices, not public approval of media coverage.

PS- If you’re interested in finding out more about Jessica you can view her final show on the ABCs Australian Story

Update: Jade died from her cancer on 22 March 2009

  1. Moments of decision Says:

I have to agree whole heartidly with what you have written.
Maybe partly it’s that Taboo thing a lot of people have been bought up with around death.
I think it is time for rethinking our whole approach.
Years back ,no TV ,no big media thing. So we still maybe have hang ups thinking that people were more ‘Polite’ about the issue when it was simply that option wasn’t there.
Many cultures embrace the dying process and incorporate it into the Life Journey. Some have a song that they are sung into life with and it is used at each major life passage including being sung to with it while dying. How comforting I think.
As for her making money to leave her children while she is at it. Dam good on her.A girls gotta do what a girls gotta do.
Lets have a page discribing all the amazing varieties of the cerominies perhaps. The maybe people will expand their comfort zones and kiddies wont have so many horrors about it.
Leaving out the Dave Allen version I saw on a recent video of course.

  2. Her name is Jade Goody , Not ‘Jane’ !

    Thankyou

  3. Thanks for pointing that out, I’ve fixed it.
