complementary & alternative treatments

Postby betsy_wat on Tue Apr 22, 2008 2:39 pm

Hello Fellow Beginners
I am just interested to hear from anyone trying complementary & alternative treatments for cancer (or anything else). I have chosen main stream medical treatment ie Chemo, but also take alot of dietary supplements and have tried diet changes/meditation etc. As to the effect of these...well...who knows...I am still here and feeling pretty good most days! My oncologist says i am "Amazing" and I take that as meaning I'm doing better than he expected! I never have and never will ask for a prognosis as personally I think this is quite a negative step...but thats another story.
I take a range of vitamins and minerals including selenium, a drink called g3, a powder called Percy's Powder, capsules containing high concentration green tea extract (all recommended by my GP!). I briefly looked at IV Vit C but knowing my veins...opted out of that one for the time being! I mentioned diet change but found that I wasnt enjoying life as much if I couldnt enjoy my food and drink. Sure, I do try to follow a healthy diet but I also love having a wine,a good coffee and treats occasionally which does wonders for seratonin levels! I know my blood test results are usually the best when I've had a great week enjoying friends and a good meal and/or some bubbly!! For me, the quality of life is important...and I aim to enjoy every day I can while staying as "normal" as possible.

Hi Betsy

I just re-read your post and see that you aren't so keen on being so totally strict on the diet side of things - I totally understand! I just wanted to say that I do know of a lady in Queensland who promotes a very strict diet therapy that you might have liked to talk to - she does consult via the internet. If you are interested I will blog her email for you. Other than that we work closely with the Lungevity.com site which is another forum for people with lung cancer. I don't know what cancer you have, but they may well be able to help you with some ideas as I know they talk about many different things, so just ask the question and I am sure you will get a response. Find them at http://www.lungevity.com.au. Take care. ;)

Thanks for that link. I have secondaries in my lungs so found the site quite relevant. Again, more stories both inspiring and scary but knowledge is so empowering. I was sad to read of the lady cutting her hair off before it fell out...dont do that...dont believe everything they tell you!!! I went thru 6 mths of chemo and had only minor hair thinning and now on a different treatment which my oncologist (and all the nurses!) assured me would leave me bald and shiny within weeks! After 2 wks hair started coming out in brush loads...but then stopped and 3 more treaments down the track I still have a decent amount of hair, certainly nothing like I was told to expect!! Never aim to be average! :D

Hi awil,

I would love the contact you mentioned as the endless search for the right practitioner continues :), could you PM or email it to me if you do not want to post it here?

Thanks :)
